  1. Be Original. Choose a topic that tells the university something unique about you. If you choose to write about an event many people experience, be sure to focus on how the event changed you, altered your perspective, or impacted your behavior.
  2. Read Examples. Read examples of good and subpar essays. Understand what makes a good essay stand out.
  3. Be Passionate and Engaged. If your topic doesn’t interest you, keep soul searching until you find a topic that ignites your passion. If you are not interested in what you are writing, no one else will be either.
  4. Keep your Focus. Develop a theme for your personal narrative and stick with it. Do not stray from your topic to try to cover more information. Elaborate on your main theme instead.
  5. Research your Prospective School. Successful individuals learn about their audience. Warren Buffet once said that he spends a few hours researching the people he is scheduled to meet so he can converse with them about their interests. Nothing is more flattering than realizing someone has taken the time to learn more about you. Universities are the same. Learn about your prospective schools to find out what they might offer you, and conversely, what you might offer them. Include that information in your essay.
  6. Plan Ahead. Do not wait until the last minute! Give yourself time to write an outline, a draft, and a revision of your essay. Even though some essay questions are straightforward, the essay is your initial opportunity to show a school why you are a desirable candidate.
  7. Proofread. Once your essay is complete, proofread it for errors. Have a trusted advisor, counselor, or professional review your essay to offer suggestions and feedback.
